Companions of the Cave – language, chauvinism & Quraan commentary

They will say [that there were] three [companions] the fourth being their dog. Others will five and their dog being their sixth. They but guess at the unknown. Others say seven and their eighth being their dog. Say, “My Cherishing Lord knows their number best.” None but a few knows them. So do dispute about them except for what is plain and apparent and do not enquire about them from any of them [unbelievers]….. [al-Kahf : 22]

They stayed in their cave for 300 years and increased 9. Say, “Allāh knows best how long they stayed…” [al-Kahf : 25-6]

Listening to the Jumu‘ah [Friday] talk, some thoughts which I had pondered on before, came to the fore. I wish to share some words on language issues and their broader context, and discuss some aspects which our attitude to knowledge reveal.

Respecting languages should work both ways

Having heard the desecration of Muḥammad into MO-HA-MID for the umpteenth time on a famous talk-radio station, I wrote to express my disappointment. When it comes to Italian or French names, the presenters take care to correctly pronounce the foreign name. Yet when it comes to Arabic names, which are far more numerous than those named in any single European language, any haphazard pronunciation will do. I did not mention that the presenter in question whom I was addressing is African, at least in terms of DNA, not Caucasian.  The station replied that they would note this for the future. Ha! Don’t hold your breath.

Conversely I find it symptomatic of the tribal chauvinism of some Muslims, as well as their academic laziness, that the entire history and geography of mankind magically conforms to their traditional language, whichever it may be. This may unfortunately include Arabic in itself for an Arab chauvinist, or Arabic vocabulary where an Arabic word is used by a non-Arab.

Someone told me that he had listened to a speech of a world famous scholar. He spoke on how Muslim explorers had apparently named a host of countries in the world. The examples cited seemed sensible enough, but I objected to Madagascar being al-Madīnah al-Aṣghar in origin. The grammar is incorrect. Had it been the case, it would have been al-Madīnah aṣ-Ṣughrā. The look of horror on the brother’s face, that I could DARE to have a different opinion, as well as his pious exclamation, “But that is what so-and-so said!” speaks volumes on the mentality of a good proportion of Muslims. By the way, you are welcome to do your own research on the etymology of Madagascar.

Getting back to Friday, the classical commentators of the Qurān were generally monolingual. Based on their time and place, and when Arabic was the world language in terms of academia, trade, politics, literature etc, it was only practical and obvious that they would record the Greek names of the Companions of the Cave [“Seven Sleepers,” as the Christians call them] in an Arabicised form, amenable to their audience.

I would ask, why is it that a millennium later, Muslim scholars who are born in western lands would still not have the aptitude to pronounce the tyrant Emperor’s name as Decius instead of Diqyānūs? Is it really practical to give the name of one of the Sleepers as Miksalmīnā to a western Muslim, or would Maximillian make more sense? Are we lazy and chauvinistic, or is it just that we have as yet not worked on the balance of holding firmly onto our religion, whilst according our host countries and their cultures their respect?

Majority commentary, Qataadah and Greek records

The Qurān is a book of guidance, not a story book. It does not discuss historical details. I would not dare comment on Allāh’s Word based on my unsubstantiated opinion, but fail to see the validity of the extremism amongst Muslims. On the one hand, there are those who expect the Qurān to comply with their theories. These people lose sight of the Qurān being the absolute truth, and worship sciences whose absolutes today is discredited the next generation. If Allāh wills, I shall write one day on my discussion with a Muslim physicist in regards infinite parallel universes.

On the other hand, some confine their minds to a single tradition. Findings from science, history, geography etc are of less than zero relevance to them, even when these fields are used as mere supporting evidence to an existing orthodox view in Islām, NOT primary proof. Any deviation from a school’s thought is disrespect to the instructors and pious predecessors. That is the problem of holding the middle ground amongst extremists. To the former, I am Neanderthal idiot, to the latter a disrespectful rebel verging on heresy.

The commentary of Qatādah – Allāh’s mercy be upon him – appealed far more to me than the majority opinion when we studied the story of the Companions of the Cave as students.

They majority view is that, “They stayed in their cave for 300 years and increased 9” means that they stayed for 300 solar equivalent to 309 lunar years in the cave. Qatādah however opined that the Verse is actually quoting the speculation of the unbelievers, just as they were quoted in regards their number speculation. Both the numbers and years are guesses in the unknown, hence the next Verse, Say, “Allāh knows best how long they stayed…”

Why I prefer Qataadah

  • Decius ruled 249 -251. So there is no harm with the Greek dating of 250.
  • If 300 is absolute, they awoke in 550.
  • This is a mere 2 decades before the birth of the Prophet Muhammad ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam.
  • The Commentators explain that the story had been revealed in response to the unbelievers testing the Prophet Muhammad ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam with an incident so ancient, that the time and place had been lost to history. How is 20 years ancient lost history?
  • The way Qatādah explains the speculation and that Allāh knows best, has a better logical flow that appeals to me.

All that being said, I can be wrong and 309 is clear and correct!

What then, is my point?

Deterioration in Muslim thinking

The point of this article is not to espouse my acceptance of Qataadah’s commentary, but to ask the reader to ponder over some points:

  • The early commentators disagreed with Qatādah but mentioned his view with equal respect.
  • Today it is not mentioned at all. 309 is mentioned as an absolute, with no difference.
  • To me this but an example of the narrowing of Muslim thinking and inability to be open to differing opinions. A single monolithic narrative is the imperative and the diversity of the earliest Muslims is null and void.
  • The above Verses clarify that the unbelievers should not be our point of reference. “…do not enquire about them from any of them.” Thus the Greek period of 180 years for them having slept is not a fact which can be used to interpret the Qurān. However, when the Greeks have a complete historical record of when the pagan Decius and believer Theodosius II ruled, can the historical Greek record not be utilised as supporting evidence for an existing view within Islām?
  • My aim is to point out the forgotten middle path. Do we keep being in two groups, one worshipping science, the other living in an intellectual vacuum? Think about it.

What will survive when the Trumpet is blown?

Comment:

Anonymous21 January 2014 10:39

As Salaam Respected Sheikh. I have a question which I was hoping the honorable Sheikh could assist with. "I have heard that there are 7 or 8 things that wont be destroyed when the trumpet is blown. Is this true? Apparently the pen is one. If so, what are the others?

JazakAllah.

My Reply:

Firstly, allow me to tender my apology, for noticing  your comment, I normally receive an email alert which I do not see in this case.

As I have stated before, those who make claims, especially in matters of religion, are obliged to offer their proof. We are not obliged to research every claim without reference. However, it is in accordance with our belief that not everything will be destroyed when the Ṣūr [Trumpet] is blown. The details of this might not however accord with what you have heard.

The Trumpet will be blown into. All those in the heavens and on earth will lose their senses [die] except for those whom, Allah wills. [az-Zumar: 68]

The grammar of the verse indicates that the excepted ones are beings “من  – who” as opposed to inanimate or non-beings “ما  – what”. From this it would seem that al-Qalam [the Pen which wrote destiny] is a creation which will be destroyed and is not excepted.

The archangels

The complete and definite list of who is excepted is in the knowledge of Allah, but we know the archangels to be definitely excepted as narrated in several books of Tafsīr [commentary of the Qurān]:

وروي من حديث أنس أن النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - تلا : ونفخ في الصور فصعق من في السماوات ومن في الأرض إلا من شاء الله فقالوا : يا نبي الله ، من هم الذين استثنى الله تعالى ؟ قال : هم جبريل وميكائيل وإسرافيل وملك الموت

Anas narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم  recited, “The Trumpet will be blown into. All those in the heavens and on earth will lose their senses [die] except for those whom, Allah wills.” So they asked, O Prophet of Allāh! Who are those whom Allāh Most High will make an exception for?” He replied, “Jibrīl, [Gabriel], Mīkāīl [Michael], Isrāfīl and the Angel of Death.”

Mūsā – Moses peace be upon him

Do not express superiority of me over Mūsā. Mankind will lose their senses and I shall be the first to gain consciousness. Mūsā will be grabbing the side of the Throne. I do not know if he will be amongst those who lose consciousness and regained it before me, or will he be amongst those whom Allāh will make an exception for. [al-Bukhārī]

Other Suggestions

There are other possibilities which the scholars have deduced and might not be explicitly mentioned by the Prophet Yet all are animate:

  • The Angels who Bear the Throne.
  • Ridwaan, the angel in charge of the gates of Paradise.
  • Mālik, the angel in charge of the gates of Hell.
  • The Ḥūr – damsels of Paradise.
  • The martys.
  • The angels of Hell.
  • The punishing creatures of Hell.

None of the famous commentaries mention the Pen. If it is amongst the exceptions the claimant should provide proof.

What will survive when the Trumpet is blown?

To name the Haramayn like a family business

(Before commencing with this article I wish to point out a slight change in my writing style, beginning with this article. Given that the majority of Muslims are not conversant with Arabic, I believe in the importance of at least maintaining a common vocabulary of words which have general understanding amongst the bulk of Muslims. Thus I only use Rasūlullāh صلى الله عليه وسلم   and never accord “Prophet” and the like any special recognition. However, it has been brought to my attention that there are non-Muslim readers of my writings, or rather servants of Allāh who have not gained full understanding as yet. I therefore apologise beforehand if my writing appears clumsier. I am attempting to balance my principles without making Islām seem incoherent and secretive. May Allāh guide me to what is correct and what pleases Him).

In respecting the Ḥaramayn (sacred cities of Makkah and al-Madīnah), Muslims are not following blind custom but uphold the dignity and love Allāh Himself accords them. Even if nothing else were said in the Qurān and Ḥadīth, the affectionate titles Allāh bestows upon them in the Qurān, are sufficient indication for those of intelligence and faith. Thus, Makkah is the Mother of all towns, and al-Madīnah is The Abode (of Migration of Rasūlullāh – Allāh’s Messenger - صلى الله عليه وسلمas well as being the Abode of Faith itself).

And this is a Book which We have sent down, blessed and confirming (The Revelations) which came before it, that you may warn the Mother of Cities and those around her. Those who believe in the Hereafter, believe in it and they guard their prayers. [al-An‘ām: 92]

And those who inhabited the Abode before them and believed [before their arrival] love those who migrated unto them. They found no desire in their hearts for what they had been given, [but instead] preferred them to themselves even if afflicted with dire poverty. Indeed those who save themself from the greed of the self are certainly the successful ones. [al-Ḥashr: 9]

As an extension of their love for Allāh and His Rasūl [Messenger]صلى الله عليه وسلم Muslims call these cities by many other names of respect and affection, e.g. aṭ-Ṭābah, aṭ-Ṭaybah -  the Pure City.  Many of these names originate from Allāh’s Messenger, Muḥammad

Naming a country after a family

The register of crimes of the Satanic Saudi regime includes many which no one ever before had perpetrated. Had these “first-ever” crimes not been so sad, it would have been humorous if one considers that the Saudi regime seems obsessed with labelling any practice they disagree with as “innovation.”  For example, they were the first to invite Christian and Jewish troops to trample the sacred soil of Arabia. They broke with the Islāmic tradition of affectionate names for Makkah and al-Madinah, and most audaciously they have been the first to rename the land as if it is some personal family estate or business, “SAUDI Arabia.”

Yes, had the Āl-Sa‘ūd founded some vegetable shop and called it Saudi Veggies, or keeping with their family activity, had they opened a casino and called it Casino Saud, then that would be their affair, but when they take the historically unprecedented step of naming the sacred lands as if it were their family business, it should be a matter of offence to every Muslim of dignity and concern.

Of great concern is how Muslims not only do not realise the gravity of this offence, or that it is an offence, but that that they casually say that they are visiting “Saudi/ Saudiyah”!!! Is that name integral to your understanding of the sacred cities? Why not drop the pernicious title of Islām’s enemies and say, “Arabia” instead? Indeed the best slave is one who does not realise he is a slave. How can Muslims accept this insult to the dignity of Islām when even the Christian monarchies never acted so arrogantly?

Christian Monarchies

·         Queen Elizabeth’s surname is supposedly Windsor, but that is a name to hide her German surname of Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha. In either case, her family has never arrogated either name over England or the United Kingdom, nor have any of the previous ruling families such as the Plantagenets, Hanoverians, Stuarts etc. The House of Saud supersedes them all in arrogance.

·         English ruling houses were relatively short-lived compared to the Capetians, who together with their relatives the Bourbons, ruled France from 987-1848. Nine centuries, but was France ever anything other than France? What utter arrogance, O House of Saud!

·          The Hohenzollerns ruled a little European county, Zollern, from before 1061. Eight centuries of epic expansion finally led to one of them being crowned over the united country of …. Hohenzollernia? No! One would think that if any family had the right to name their land after themselves it would be the family which took 8 centuries to unite their country. Yet they too did not have the arrogance of the House of Saud. A Hohenzollern was crowned in 1871 as GERMAN Emperor.

An Exception

The Saudis are not entirely alone however. Yet the nature of their company only emphasises the conceit of these two bedfellows.

The Liechtensteins bought Schellenberg in 1699 and Vaduz in 1712 for political reasons. In 1719 they were incorporated as the Principality of Liechtenstein. Since the “country” was bought solely for political reasons, no Liechtenstein prince even bothered to set foot in the county for over 120 years!

How similar to the Saudis who are more at home in their villas in Spain and France than in the land they named after themselves and which they milk like a cow.

Innovation

The innovation-obsessed Saudis need to answer for their criminal innovation of naming the sacred land of Makkah and al-Madīnah as if they are their family fiefs. This is an innovation no one before committed. This is but one crime out of many which make them wholly unsuited to rule a single grain of the sacred soil of Arabia. It is also a cover for their false claims of legitimacy. By maintaining silence on this matter, the Muslims too become complicit in the crimes of the Satanic Saudi regime. May Allāh grant that we see a day when the sun will rise on an Arabia free of the Saudi pollutant.
